‘Merck More Than a Mother’ Health Media Training
The Health Media Training is a part of ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ community awareness Program. It is organized to emphasize the important role that media plays to influence our society to create a cultural shift with the aim to break the stigma around infertility in general and Infertile women in particular, through their valuable work as well as raise awareness of Male Infertility and infertility prevention through the ‘Merck More than a Father’ Campaign.
It is designed to benefit the journalists in understanding the infertility issue in African communities and to learn the best media practices to cover such issues and raise awareness by following international standards of reporting and media ethics.
The training is addressed by Fertility Experts and Eminent Media Personalities. It provides a great opportunity for the journalists to meet the experts and to network with each other and work as a unit to eradicate the stigma around infertility and achieve campaign goals.
Merck Foundation believes that that media plays a significant role to influence the society and communities to create a cultural shift. It has the capacity and ability to break the stigma around infertility in the community.
“Merck More Than a Mother’ Health Media Training has been previously organized many African countries including in Kenya, Senegal, Zambia, Burundi, Liberia, Niger, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Ghana. Merck Foundation, in Partnership with the offices of the First Ladies and Ministry of Information, has so far trained over 1,200 journalists from over 20 countries.
Following the Health Media Training, Merck Foundation in partnership with the First Ladies, Ministries of Health, Ministries of Information and Journalist societies in each country announces the calls for applications for the ‘Merck More than a Mother’ Media Recognition Awards.

Theme: Raising awareness on infertility prevention and breaking infertility stigma in Africa.
Who can apply?
Journalists from print, online, radio and multimedia platforms.
Last date of submission:
Entries can be submitted till 15th June 2020.
Submitted entries must be published in a public domain before the deadline.
Please share the evidence through submitting link / scanned copy of the print copy with your submission.

The call for applications Awards is open to Six groups:
*For English Speaking African Countries, the selection committee may decide to sub- categorize the regions to East, West and South African Countries, based on number and quality received from each region to give a better opportunity for each region.Special awards will be selected for young emerging talents who are able to show outstanding potential through their submissions. Merck Foundation together with its partners announces the calls for applications for the ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ Media Recognition Awards through a public press release address to African Media as well as through the Merck Foundation and partners’ website and social media channels.

Merck More Than a Mother Media Recognition Committee:
The committee is formed to select the winners in an unbiased manner, based on evaluating the quality of information included to sensitize the communities about breaking the stigma of infertility, increase the respect of infertile and childless women, raise awareness about male infertility and provide information about infertility prevention in a way that regular community member can comprehend in line with the objectives of the Merck More than a Mother campaign to raise awareness within the communities.

Winners will be notified personally via email, followed by a press release for public announcement and on the Merck Foundation and partners website and social media channels by the end of October 2020.
Merck Foundation strongly believes in the critical role that media and art play to create culture shift and raise awareness about health and sensitive issue such as infertility stigma. Therefore, we announced the ‘Merck More Than a Mother’ Media Recognition Awards 2019.
We received a good response from all of you in the form of several excellent entities from journalists across Africa and we specifically received many excellent entries from Ghana . Thus, the Merck More Than a Mother media award Committee has decided to create Four Groups of Awards so that we can equally encourage talented and passionate media personal across the continent.
The four groups are:
1. French Speaking African Countries
2. Southern African Countries
3. East African Countries
Moreover, the Merck More Than a Mother Committee decided to create Special Awards to encourage and motivate emerging young talents.
